Distinguished and Famous people from Templestowe

🎨 Louis Buvelot

Swiss-born Louis Buvelot made Templestowe part of Australian art history through Summer afternoon, Templestowe. His surviving charcoal study, dated to about 1866, records the preparation behind the landscape painting. The National Gallery of Victoria identifies Templestowe as the study's place of execution. Buvelot had worked in Brazil before coming to Australia in 1865, bringing an experienced painter's eye to a new landscape. The scene also helped inspire a younger generation: Arthur Streeton's interest in finding the setting later became part of his own explorations around Heidelberg and Templestowe.

🖌️ Arthur Streeton

Arthur Streeton's small oil painting At Templestowe, made in 1889, preserves a specific artistic connection with the district. The Art Gallery of South Australia records the work as painted at Templestowe. Shortly beforehand, Streeton had gone looking for the setting of Louis Buvelot's earlier Templestowe landscape. On the return journey he was offered the use of a farmhouse at the Mount Eagle estate, now Eaglemont, where he and fellow painters subsequently worked. Templestowe thus appears both as a subject in his own art and in the chain of encounters behind an influential period of outdoor painting around Melbourne.
